Welcome to the World of Äncale

Behind every fantasy story lies a world far larger than the pages that contain it.

When I began writing The Last King of Äncale more than a decade ago, I wasn't simply telling the story of a plague or a kingdom at war. I was asking a question:

What kind of world would produce these people?

Every nation, every river, every song, every flower, and every legend had to exist before the story could unfold.

That became Äncale.

Unlike many fantasy worlds where magic is commonplace, magic in Äncale is subtle. It is woven into creation itself rather than wielded like a weapon. The greatest powers are not found in fireballs or enchanted swords, but in song, spoken words, memory, and sacrifice.

The elves understand this instinctively. Their songs awaken joy, calm fear, and draw them into harmony with the forests they call home. Men, by contrast, possess another kind of power—the power of their word. A promise carries weight. An oath binds. Justice depends upon words that cannot easily be broken. These different understandings of power shape the civilizations of elves and men long before they shape the conflicts of the novels.

The geography of the world reflects these differences as well. Ancient forests stand beside cultivated kingdoms. Rivers become borders. Mountains divide cultures. Every location has a history, and nearly every name carries a story waiting to be told.

Over the coming weeks, this Lorebook will explore those stories.

You'll discover:

  • The kingdoms of men and elves.

  • The origins of the Scourge.

  • The Ancient Ones and their influence upon history.

  • Forgotten legends.

  • Maps and timelines.

  • Characters whose stories stretch across centuries.

  • The connections between The Last King of Äncale and The Despair of Kréchellia.

Some entries will reveal details hidden between the lines of the novels. Others will introduce places and histories that have never before appeared in print.

Whether you've just entered Äncale for the first time or have walked its roads for years, I hope these pages make the world feel a little larger—and a little more real.

Welcome to the World of Äncale.
